The Dialectics of Space (DOS) is a temporary, fabricated environment that first occupied the entirety of Temporary's space and was then reconstructed and reconfigured for KuvanKevat 2017. Each configuration of the project was not just be a construction, but a functional and social space where the various zones were also utilized for relational events such as meals, workshops, meetings, et cetera where spaces and the events were intended to inform each other for the creation of a imposing situation and a unusual or unique experience.
D.O.S. was built specifically to interact with its surrounding architecture as a whole, looking to transform it into an interactive and explorable space which could sometimes be physically intimidating while in other moments comforting, creating a visceral reaction in the viewer. Through the project, the space itself becomes one single, ephemeral work of art, architecture, environment. Events for each version are situated in nodes of each installation which have been specifically constructed for them.

Through D.O.S., the viewer is immersed in a sensory and inflicting environment which, beyond its physicality, will affect individuals through changing light and sound-scapes. The only way to understand the gestalt of the work will be to spend time exploring the space as well as attending the scheduled events happening during the experiment period.
The experiment attempts to find points of convergence where dialogical processes, labor, architecture, pedagogy, play, experimentation, and environment meet through a process oriented approach. The end result of the project will hopefully be a combining of physical, sensory and social experiences within the fabricated environment where viewers will be absorbed into a temporary world existing between fantasy and reality, art and architecture, as well as viewer and environment.

At each of the links below, we will examine the two versions of Dialectics of Space and the results of that implementation. Each was realized under a different format of cultural venue. Contrasting and comparing these two examples gives an indication of Dialectics of Space’s advantages, limitations, as well as its potential. In this we can look beyond what exists and conjure further manifestations which progress and create spatial nexuses which are more fluid and dynamic.
